Pre-Owned Jewellery: What to Check Before You Order

Pre-owned designer jewellery β€” bracelets, rings, bangles, necklaces and earrings β€” follows the same honest rules as every pre-owned purchase, but the checks are smaller, literally. A bracelet’s clasp or a ring’s setting can be hard to judge at a glance, and small wear is easy to miss in a single photo. Before you order, work through these checks against the listing photos.

LuxuriesCart is an independent reseller and is not affiliated with, authorised by, or endorsed by any brand. Every piece below is a previously owned, one-of-a-kind item, photographed in detail so you can see the exact item you will receive.

1. Look at the metal before anything else

The metal is the piece. Study it in every photo, not just the brightest one: look for scratches, dents, fading or uneven colour across the surface, and compare the colour in photos taken in different light. Bracelets and bangles show wear where they rest against the wrist and where links or sections join; rings show it on the band, especially the underside. Light, even surface marks are ordinary on a pre-owned piece. Deep dents, bent sections or areas where the finish has worn away unevenly are different, and should be visible in the listing if present.

2. Check stamps and marks β€” as photographed, not as assumed

Many designer jewellery pieces carry stamps or marks: a brand name, a metal mark, or a small engraving. The listing photos should show these marks where they exist. Read what is actually visible in the photos and compare it with the listing description β€” do not assume a mark that the photos do not show. If a mark you care about is unclear or missing from the photos, ask before ordering, quoting the listing’s SKU. A clear photo of the mark is part of a good listing; its absence from the photos is a reason to ask, not to guess.

3. Test every clasp, hinge and closure in the photos

Jewellery closures do the daily work, and they wear first. For a bracelet or necklace, look closely at the clasp: it should meet evenly, sit squarely, and show no bending, gaps or repairs. For a bangle with a hinge, check the hinge area and the closing point for looseness or uneven wear. For earrings, check the posts, backs and any clips shown. A closure that looks strained, bent or misaligned in photos will be a daily problem in real wear β€” and closures are the parts most likely to fail if they are already tired.

4. Examine stones and settings with care

If the piece carries stones, study each setting: the stone should sit level and secure, with prongs or bezels that look even and complete. Look for stones that sit tilted, prongs that look bent or worn thin, and settings with visible gaps. The stones themselves should be checked for chips, cracks or heavy surface wear visible in close-up photos. This guide does not grade stones β€” that is not something a listing photo can settle β€” but a stone that is loose, chipped or missing is something the photos should reveal, and something worth asking about if the photos are unclear.

5. Get the size and fit right

Jewellery sizing is unforgiving: a bracelet that does not fit cannot be worn, and pre-owned pieces cannot be exchanged for another size. Check the listed measurements β€” bracelet length and width, ring size, necklace length β€” and compare them with a piece you already own and wear comfortably. For a ring, confirm the size as listed rather than estimating from photos. For a bangle, check whether it is a fixed size or an open design, and whether the listing states its inner measurement. If any measurement is missing, ask for it before ordering.

6. Confirm what’s included

Some pre-owned jewellery arrives with its box, pouch or papers, and some does not. What is included should be stated on the listing. Judge the piece on what is actually included, not on what the same design might have included when it was first sold β€” and remember that papers and packaging do not change the piece itself, only what arrives with it.

7. The same purchase rules as every pre-owned piece

A jewellery piece is a single, previously owned item: once it sells, it will not be restocked. There are no change-of-mind returns or exchanges, so a return is accepted only if the item is significantly different from its description or photos, has a major undisclosed defect, or is the wrong item β€” and then only if you contact us within 14 days of the shipment date, keep the uniquely numbered security tag intact, and wait for a return authorisation before sending anything back. Orders ship worldwide from China via FedEx, with rates calculated at checkout, and duties, taxes and VAT are the recipient’s responsibility. Read the full Returns & Refunds Policy and Shipping Policy before ordering.

If the metal, marks, closures, stones, size and contents all match the photos and the description, you are buying with your eyes open β€” which is exactly how pre-owned jewellery should be bought.
