Buying Pre-Owned Hermès: Kelly and Birkin

Hermès handbags at LuxuriesCart are led by two shapes: the Kelly and the Birkin. Both are structured leather handbags, both are sold here only as pre-owned pieces, and both deserve a slow read of their listing photos — because on a structured bag, previous use shows in very specific places. Every Hermès listing is a single, previously owned item, photographed in detail and listed with its own brand, SKU and condition. This guide explains the two shapes and what to check.

LuxuriesCart is an independent reseller and is not affiliated with, authorised by, or endorsed by Hermès. A pre-owned Hermès piece bought here is a previously owned item from an independent store, not a new item from the brand.

KELLY: THE STRUCTURED TRAPEZOID

The Kelly is a structured, trapezoid-shaped handbag with a single top handle, a flap front, and a lock with a small leather clochette (the little cover that holds the keys). It stands upright on its own and keeps a firm, formal silhouette. Because it is so structured, the Kelly shows its history honestly: the shape either holds evenly, or it does not, and the straight-on photos will tell you which.

In the photos, start with the overall shape: the sides should fall straight and the base should sit level. Then look at the single handle — check where it meets the bag, and the leather itself for creasing or darkening from carrying. Next, the flap, the lock and the clochette: the lock should sit straight on the flap, and the photos should show the clochette and its condition. If a listing shows the lock or keys, check them in the close-ups; if they are not shown, do not assume they are included — what is photographed is what is described.

Then check the corners and base edges, where a structured bag meets surfaces, and the stitching along the edges, which should look even and intact. On a pre-owned Kelly, light edge wear is possible; the photos show how much, on this exact bag.

BIRKIN: THE TWO-HANDLED TOTE

The Birkin is a larger, open-top tote shape with two top handles and a flap front, also with a lock and clochette. Where the Kelly is a formal trapezoid, the Birkin is a roomier, more everyday shape — but it is still structured leather, and the same photo discipline applies.

Check the two handles first: both should be examined where they join the bag, and compared with each other, since uneven wear between the two handles can show in the photos. Then the flap, lock and clochette, as with the Kelly. Because the Birkin is carried open at the top more often, look at the top edges and the interior in particular: the interior photos show the lining, any pocket, and the inside of the flap. Finally, the corners and base — a larger bag meets more surfaces, so these areas carry the clearest signs of previous use.

WHAT THE PHOTOS CANNOT SHOW — AND WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT

Photos show condition, not feel. The weight of the leather, the stiffness of the structure, and the exact shade in daylight are hard to judge from images alone. That is why the listing gives you several photos, not one: front, back, sides, base, interior, hardware and details. Look at all of them, not just the first. If a detail matters to you — the lock, the clochette, the interior, the stitching — and it is not clearly photographed, contact us through the Contact Us page and quote the listing’s SKU before ordering. We can answer about the exact piece.

Condition on every listing is stated plainly: pre-owned, with no grading scale to decode. The condition line plus the detailed photos together describe the piece’s state, and the photos show the actual item you will receive — never a stock image. For the full picture of the term, read what “pre-owned” means at LuxuriesCart, and for a walkthrough of a listing, see how to read a LuxuriesCart listing.

ONE OF A KIND, SHIPPING AND RETURNS

Each Kelly or Birkin listing is one physical item. “1 in stock” means that exact bag is available right now; when it sells, it is gone, and the same item will not be restocked. If you are deciding between two pieces, either one can sell while you are deciding.

Orders ship worldwide from China via FedEx, with rates calculated at checkout based on weight, dimensions and destination. Duties, taxes and VAT are the recipient’s responsibility (DDU delivery) and are not included in the item price or shipping rate. The full rates and delivery windows are on the Shipping Policy page.

Returns are strict because each piece is unique: no change-of-mind returns or exchanges. A return is accepted only if the item is significantly different from its description or photos, has a major defect that was not disclosed, or is the wrong item. In that case, contact us within 14 days of the shipment date, keep the uniquely numbered security tag intact, and wait for a return authorisation before sending anything back. The full terms are on the Returns & Refunds Policy page.

THE SHORT VERSION

For a Kelly, check the trapezoid shape, the single handle, the flap, lock and clochette, and the corners. For a Birkin, check both handles, the top edges, the interior and the base. For both, study every photo, confirm the SKU and stock line, read the shipping and returns terms, and ask before ordering if anything is unclear.
